A headache is any lasting pain or ache in the head area. But that pain may take many different forms for many different reasons. You may not be aware of this but there are over 150 different types of headaches, and a wide range of causes, pain patterns and treatments to go with them.
What Causes Headaches?
What causes your headache depends upon what type of headache you have. A tension headache is usually caused by stress and comes with mild to moderate throbbing pain. A migraine headache is a much more severe type of headache with more intense pain and often light sensitivity and nausea. It usually requires quiet, darkness, and bed rest. A sinus headache can appear when your sinuses are clogged, usually due to a cold, and may feel like heavy pressure inside the head. Post-traumatic headaches can follow physical injury to the head, while cluster headaches are characterized by intense piercing pain, usually around one eye. These can occur multiple times a day for weeks.
How Do We Treat Headaches?
We will treat a headache by talking to you about your symptoms. For most headaches, over-the-counter analgesic medication, time, and rest will be sufficient to treat your headache. However, if your headache is particularly severe or persistent, follows a head injury, or is accompanied by vomiting, we will probably want more diagnostic testing, such as an MRI, to rule out a more serious condition.
